Who are we?
Selwo Marina is an innovative park concept, offering ways to approach and learn to respect its fauna with three objectives: discover, learn and have fun.
All the species at Selwo Marina receive the highest standards of care to achieve their maximum welfare, and always under the strict supervision of qualified personnel made up of vets, biologists and keepers.
The species of Selwo Marina live in controlled environments, wich are strategically designed to guarantee their maximum well-being. A team of expert vets, biologists and caregivers take care of the wildlife of the park. Among their work in the Department of Wildlife of Selwo Marina are the control of feeding, with personalized and balanced diets for each species, observation and monitoring of the fauna or the special care devoted by the department to breeding, with monitoring of gestation and, subsequently, babies.
Selwo Marina, through the Parques Reunidos Foundation, participates in different projects which aim to conserve and protect wild animals, with a section specially directed to threatened species and those in danger of extinction, defending the environment, biodiversity and raising social awareness of the problems facing the natural world. The park is a member of prestigious international associations such as the EAZA and AIZA, as well as following the strategies of the WAZA in relation to conservation and animal welfare.
Maintaining environmental balance is a maxim for Selwo Marina, as it takes on the commitment of protecting the species of fauna and flora in danger of extinction.
Parques Reunidos Foundation
One of the principal objectives of the Parques Reunidos Foundation is to try and provide the information, education and awareness required to sensitize others in relation to the complex problems facing the planet and its natural environments.
In order to do so, it is essential for us to be aware of the great importance of sustainable development hand in hand with conservation of biological diversity, as a reflection of our coexistence with nature and with the environment.
Similarly, the Foundation also seeks to protect childhood and defend democratic principals promoting tolerance and education in relation to values and the promotion of volunteer work and social action.
AIZA - Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums
The Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AIZA) is a non-profit making entity which brings together the principal zoological parks and aquariums of Spain and Portugal.
In its beginnings it was constituted as the Spanish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AEZA). Over the years it gradually grew and from 1998 the number of associates quickly increased, reaching forty in number. Part of this growth can be attributed to the entry in the year 2000 of the zoos and aquariums of Portugal, fact which led to the change of name of the then AEZA to the current AIZA.
EAZA - European Association of Zoos and Aquariums
European Association of Zoos and Aquariums promotes cooperation for the conservation of fauna, in particular for internationally coordinated breeding programmes for wild animals, such as the European Endangered Species programmes (EEP). It also promotes environmental education
WAZA - World Association of Zoos and Aquariums
The goal of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums is to guide, encourage and support the zoos, aquariums and like-minded organisations of the world in animal care and welfare, environmental education and global conservation.
Selwo Marina participates in different programmes for the breeding in captivity of endangered species (EEP’s). Important work which contributes to the conservation and reproduction of species in danger of extinction on our Planet.
