The Datura is a species of the genus Brugmansia belonging to the Solanaceae family. It is a perennial shrub reaching up to five metres in height, deciduous, with alternating oval leaves bearing asymmetrical blades at the base. The Datura is widespread throughout South America and naturalised or cultivated in the rest of the world.
The ritual consumption of Brugmansia is an important feature of the shamanism practiced by some indigenous peoples in the eastern Amazon, such as the Jíbaros.
